Project Red Clay

With the designer Aino Michelsen we are searching new uses for local Finnish red clay.

As furniture designers, we are looking for new uses for low-burning red clay on a furniture scale. With no prior experience in ceramics, we decided to join forces and see how we could combine our background in furniture design with this new (old) material.

We spent June 2024 in Taattisten tila artist residency, focusing on local wild clay dug out from the nearby lake. We asked a friend to custom-make two big extruder tools to fit into the project. Using different handmade templates we have been able to produce all the different forms seen in the pictures and in ‘SAVI‘ exhibition in July. The Taattisten tila residency allowed us to fully focus on the different phases of working with clay, from digging it from the nearby lake to drying it, extruding it, and finally firing some of the pieces.

We are looking forward to continuing the project in the fall 2024.

During the residency we did form studies with the two extruder tools and developed an idea for a space divider. The space divider can be used to create all sorts of architectural and decorative structures. The three-dimensional elements rotate around their axis inviting the user to interact with the piece and allowing for an interplay of light and shadow. Made in extruded terracotta, the rough and earthy surface of red clay bring warmth and character to any interior.
